STOP BY AND “CHAT"

Please join us for the first Chat of the 2011-2012 year at CUA SLIS.  We have a great line up of “Chatters” for this first semester starting with three highly regarded information professionals in the area.  They will share their experiences and their expertise about what it’s like to work in a government, independent consulting and other specialty library each of them has a very different background and employment history.  They will provide advice and insight about what life is like in the workplace, and will answer your questions on anything from how to develop a career path and which skills to develop to when to change jobs and how to market yourself – and more.

Our Chatters will be:
  • Chris Olson, Consultant with Chris Olson Associates:
Chris has been leading Chris Olson & Associates for more than 27 years. Her consulting practice is dedicated to helping information services and knowledge professionals with their marketing, brand management and communications. Her newest client is the Knowledge Discovery/Knowledge Management group at Merck. There she's creating and implementing a comprehensive brand communications program which will be rolled out next year.


Chris is the Past President of the SLA Maryland Chapter (2009) and recipient of the Chapter's 2010 Chapter Champion Award. She has written a chapter about library branding strategies for the forthcoming book "Marketing Methods for Libraries" being published next year. Chris received  her BA from Temple University, an MLS from the University of Maryland and an MBA from Johns Hopkins

  • Theo Jones-Quartey, Corporate Librarian from Grace & Co.
Theo Jones-Quartey is the Director of the Library & information Center at W.R. Grace & Company in Columbia, MD. Her previous positions include five years as Assistant Professor and Engineering Librarian at Memphis State University, and the Assistant Manager, Publication Selection at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in Philadelphia, PA.

Theo received her MS in Library and Information Science from Drexel University. Prior to attending Drexel, Theo obtained a BS degree in Social Sciences from the University of Science and Technology in her native country, Ghana, West Africa.

  • Lesley Soto, Intelligence Librarian from National Security Agency:
Lesley Soto is a librarian with the National Security Agency of the Department of Defense.  She signed for her own library card at the age of 3 1/2; and has worked in libraries since high school. Her first job out of college was as a library assistant at the American Bankers Assn.

Lesley came to the Agency as an analyst, but decided she preferred to be in the library, so she went back to library school and has been in library and information services ever since. She spent two years (2006-2008) on loan to the Army (still in intelligence), in England.
